2016 is an incredibly exciting year for WISE – we have welcomed in a new committee, launched our very first conference, as well as run a multitude of other events for our members, and are now launching our brand new website!
Over the course of the last academic year, WISE have grown from strength to strength, which the new committee aim to build upon as the society grows even more. Here’s a quick summary of what we’ve been up to last year:
Women in Technology Conference
On February 6th, the WISE and the Computer Science Society (CSS) ran the first ever Women in Technology conference at the University of Birmingham. The day consisted of talks and workshops from invited industry speakers and event sponsors; it was the first event of its kind to be run by these societies. Feedback from both students and industry partners indicated the conference was well received, as shown in the video below:
For the next Women in Tech conference we’ve teamed up with CSS and have a new partner in oSTEM; it will be on Saturday November 12th, and work is already underway to make the next one bigger and better!
WISE held multiple ‘WISE Inspire’ events this year, where attendees heard from inspirational speakers, from both academia and industry, about their careers and the paths they took to get there. Short question and answer sessions followed each talk, and the evening concluded with the chance to network with the speakers over food and drink. Each event was a huge success, and we look forward to holding several more over the course of the next year.
Socials are an important part of any society, so we made sure to organise as many as possible for our members. We had a film night, showing ‘A Beautiful Mind’, went bowling, held welcome back meetings at the start of each term, and went out for meals so we could sit and have a chat with each other! We hope to improve on this and hold even more socials with our members, and with our 2 new Social Secs we shouldn’t disappoint!
We hope you enjoyed your whirlwind tour around what we did last year, thank you for reading! To keep up to date with all the latest news with WISE, be sure to sign up for our newsletter, and also follow us on all our social media.
Until next time,
Helena (PR Officer)
